Football is dynamic and ever evolving. Players who at one point proved efficient may be less effective in the next day. It’s up to the manager to read the mood of the team and players at an individual level.
The year began with Unai Emery prefering to play Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the solo Striker. That yielded few results. This is because the Premier League is a very physical league and that type of game doesn’t favour the Gabon striker. Aubameyang’s strength is his speed but in tight areas, he often struggles to find space to maneuver, nevertheless he is a top quality finisher.
We then saw Lacazatte being employed in the same role, the efficiency was there but that also faded because Lacazatte is not a fast player but is very good with tight games as seen in that goal versus Liverpool creating space from nowhere to finish that goal.
After that game play we saw both players come on in one game and the goals started coming again. Aubameyang uses the space created by Lacazatte as he cuts in from the right. I think it is a great partnership between the two strikers.
However I think Arsenal is becoming a bit too predictable to most teams especially that it doesn’t have natural wingers. At this stage I feel Arsenal needs to allow Aubemayang to play up front so that he can get accustomed to the physical demands of the league if they are to count on him when Lacazatte is not available since its his first season.
In addition to that I feel the partnership can be used more in the second half. Both Lacazatte and Aubameyang have proved to be effective from the bench. Auba alone has scored more than half of his goals coming in from the bench. This being as a result of opposition teams being tired and losening up in the second half. This I feel would bring another dimension to our game given we no longer have Danny welbeck available.
