Kieran Tierney reveals the Arsenal player that surprised him the most when he joined in 2019
Arsenal left back Kieran Tierney has revealed the player that surprised him the most when he had just arrived at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal signed Kieran Tierney from Celtic in the 2019 summer transfer window and he has turned out to be an incredible signing for the North Londoners as he was one of the players that was very influential in them winning the 2020 Emirates FA Cup. The Scottish left back has revealed the player that surprised him the most when he arrived at Arsenal.
Kieran Tierney spent most of his footballing career at Celtic and the gunners managed to finally sign him in last year’s summer transfer window since he was very impressive for the Scottish side in their league and the UEFA Champions League. Tierney’s move to Arsenal was his first move to a different country and club in his career and he was recently asked about the differences between English football and Scottish club, and he mentioned a particular Arsenal player that surprised him the most.
Kieran Tierney has revealed that he was quite surprised with the tempo of Gabriel Martinelli in training even though they both arrived at Arsenal in the same transfer window. The Scottish left back says that when he saw that from the young Brazilian international, he then understood how English football has a very different intensity than what he was used to.
“For me, going into the first couple of training sessions it was the tempo. Honestly, the first session, I was against (Gabriel) Martinelli. Young boy, I knew he was good.” Kieran Tierney said on the Open Goal Keeping The Ball On The Ground podcast.
“I was like ‘Woah, this is the standard man. He is unbelievable’. Even running back, I would be running back and he would be following me. The effort and attitude was unreal.”
Gabriel Martinelli has also not only impressed Tierney in training but also on the pitch as he scored 10 goals last season as well as making two assists.
