Report: Shkodran Mustafi turns down contract offer, makes decision regarding his future
Arsenal centre-half Mustafi has reportedly rejected a new contract and has made a decision on his future.
Arsenal in 2016 signed Mustafi for a fee in the region of £35m making him Arsenal’s most expensive defender of all time.
The German defender has brought in with a high anticipation that he’d be Arsenal’s main man at the back for years to come when Mertesacker and Koscielny left.
However, he failed to justify his price tag and it’s safe to say he has been a flop.
The 28 year-old has rejected a new contract offer from Arsenal according to Football.London and has told the club he will leave for free next summer once his contract expires.
Mustafi who has been error prone in Arsenal’s back-line was on the verge of being sold under Unai Emery. But he got himself back into the team under Mikel Arteta and showed signs of improvement.
His good run of form was brought to an end when he sustained an injury during the FA cup win over Man City.
Arsenal fans were reminded of the calamitous Mustafi they know on Sunday night as he was culprit for Leicester’s winner.
Despite this decision, for now Arsenal will have to rely on Mustafi as he is currently the only fit central defender alongside Gabriel. Mari, Chambers, Holding and now Luiz are all injured while Saliba and Sokratis aren’t part of the Premier and Europa League squads.
But the question is why would Arsenal offer a new contract to a player that is a huge liability and has costed Arsenal points on several occasions.
