It's been three years since Arsenal and Mesut Ozil sent different ways, and the German international has opened up about his finest moment at the Emirates Stadium as well as on his relationship with Arsene Wenger.
Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has recently announced his retirement from football at the age of 34. However, before he hangs up his boots for good, he took the time to reflect on his time at Arsenal and revealed the moment that he believes was his finest as a player of the North Londoners.
In an interview with Marca, Ozil stated that his best game for Arsenal was in 2018 against Leicester City where they won 3-1. This game saw Ozil score a goal and provide an assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The German playmaker was instrumental in leading Arsenal to victory, showcasing his exceptional vision and creativity on the pitch.
“I think my best game for Arsenal was in 2018 against Leicester City – 3:1.” said Mesut Ozil when asked about his favourite moment at Arsenal.
And on his relationship with Wenger.
“He was a true gentleman. Always very respectful. When he left the club, something was missing. We had a great relationship and I feel privileged that he was my manager at Arsenal.” said Ozil.
Ozil’s relationship with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was also discussed in the interview. The midfielder spoke highly of Wenger, describing him as a true gentleman who was always very respectful. He also expressed how much he missed having a coach like him not being in the dugout.
When Wenger left the club in 2018, something was missing for Ozil. The two had a great relationship during their time together at Arsenal, and Ozil feels privileged to have had Wenger as his manager. Wenger played a significant role in bringing Ozil to Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013, and under his guidance, Ozil flourished into one of the best playmakers in Europe.
Despite facing criticism from some fans and pundits during his time at Arsenal, Ozil remains one of the most talented players to have ever worn an Arsenal shirt. His ability to create chances out of nothing and pick out passes that others couldn’t see made him a fan favorite among many Gunners supporters.
As he prepares to retire from football, Mesut Ozil can look back on his time at Arsenal with pride. He may have faced some challenges along the way, but he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most gifted midfielders to have ever graced the Premier League.
