Tierney reveals his true feelings about Zinchenko taking his spot in starting lineup
The signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko led to Kieran Tierney losing his spot in the starting eleven and the Scottish man has opened up about his thoughts about that issue.
Kieran Tierney, currently on loan at Real Sociedad from Arsenal, has spoken candidly about losing his starting position to Oleksandr Zinchenko and his subsequent move away from the Emirates. Despite the change in his role, Tierney expresses understanding and respect for Mikel Arteta’s decision, emphasizing the importance of team success over individual aspirations.
“There are no hard feelings or spite from me,” Tierney shared with The Telegraph. “I understand the decision of the manager to change me from No 1 to No 2. It’s football.” The Scottish international acknowledges the tactical reasoning behind Arteta’s choice to utilize Zinchenko as an inverted full-back, a role that has become increasingly prominent in modern football.
Tierney further elaborates on the impersonal nature of the decision, stating, “It never happened in a personal way. It was tactical. He thought it was best to get Arsenal results — and he was 100 per cent correct, when you look at it.” He recognizes the positive impact Zinchenko’s arrival has had on the team, contributing to their strong performances and title aspirations.
Despite his departure, Tierney retains a deep appreciation for the Arsenal fans and the club. He shares, “The Arsenal fans are amazing. Whenever I post, or Sociedad post, there are still fans saying, ‘We wish you were here’. It makes me happy, as they could easily just forget about me because I’m not there anymore.”
Tierney’s words reflect a mature perspective and a genuine desire for Arsenal’s success. He understands the competitive nature of football and the need for tactical adaptations, while also cherishing the memories and support he received during his time at the club.
