Arsenal technical director Edu Gaspar has candidly described the “big mess” he encountered upon his arrival at the club, revealing a squad filled with aging, overpaid players who were not delivering on the pitch.

Speaking to MenInBlazers, Edu stated, “When I came into Arsenal, with all my respect, almost everyone was over 26, 27 – big salaries & not performing. If you have those three elements, which club in the world wants to come here & buy one of our players? No one!”

Edu’s comments paint a stark picture of the situation he inherited, highlighting a lack of transfer activity and a squad that was seemingly difficult to move players from. This situation undoubtedly hampered Arsenal’s ability to attract top talent, as potential suitors were hesitant to invest in a team with a bloated wage bill and underperforming players.

However, Edu’s work has brought about a noticeable transformation. The club has successfully implemented a younger, more dynamic squad, with a clear focus on developing academy talents and making strategic acquisitions.

This shift is evident in recent transfer activity, including the recent sale of academy product Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham for £27 million. While some may view this as a loss, it demonstrates the club’s commitment to restructuring and building a sustainable future, a far cry from the “big mess” that Edu inherited.

The improvements made by Edu in terms of squad composition and transfer strategy have been instrumental in Arsenal’s recent rise. The club is now a more attractive proposition for top players, while also developing a sustainable model for future success.
