Mikel Arteta has remained tight-lipped on speculation surrounding Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer. The Gunners manager, known for his guarded approach to transfer matters, refused to comment on the potential arrival of the Spanish international.

“You know that I cannot talk about other players,” Arteta stated when asked about Merino.

While Arteta kept his cards close to his chest, the rumors surrounding Merino have intensified in recent weeks. The 28-year-old midfielder has impressed in La Liga, particularly last season, where he scored five goals and provided three assists for Real Sociedad. His performances have caught the eye of several top clubs, including Arsenal, who are seeking to strengthen their midfield options.

The Gunners have already made one signing this summer, bringing in Italian left-back Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a reported fee of €45 million. However, with the transfer window still open, Arsenal are expected to make further additions to their squad, and Merino remains a prominent name on their shortlist.

Arteta’s refusal to comment on the Merino rumors suggests that negotiations are ongoing, but also underscores the manager’s preference to focus on the current squad and their upcoming season opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

With a new season on the horizon, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Arsenal will be able to secure Merino’s signature and further strengthen their midfield depth. While Arteta remains coy on the matter, the speculation surrounding Merino highlights the club’s ambition to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for top honors.
