Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed the controversial red card incident involving William Saliba during their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth. The Gunners’ Premier League title hopes suffered a significant blow at the Vitality Stadium as they were reduced to 10 men for the third time this season. Saliba was dismissed after a VAR intervention, following a challenge on Bournemouth striker Evanilson, leaving Arteta’s side at a disadvantage.

When asked if he was surprised by Saliba’s challenge, Arteta defended his defender, explaining the complexity of such situations. “I don’t know, it’s a split-second decision you have to make, the striker is on his back. Obviously, he doesn’t expect the ball and then suddenly it’s coming his way. He’s made a decision and that’s it, the referee has decided to give a yellow and then a red card,” Arteta told Arsenal Media.

Despite a few crucial saves from David Raya that kept Arsenal in contention, Bournemouth capitalized on their numerical advantage. Substitute Ryan Christie broke the deadlock with 20 minutes remaining, finishing a well-executed set-piece routine. Moments later, Raya conceded a penalty that Justin Kluivert coolly converted, sealing Bournemouth’s 2-0 victory.

The loss leaves Arsenal in third place with 17 points after eight games, missing an opportunity to go top of the table. With a challenging week ahead, including a UEFA Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates, and a Premier League showdown with leaders Liverpool, Arsenal must regroup quickly. Meanwhile, Bournemouth celebrated a well-earned win, marking their second victory over the Gunners in their history.

Arteta will be hoping to see a more disciplined performance as Arsenal look to bounce back from this setback.
