Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg has voiced his displeasure over Gabriel Magalhães’ choice of celebration during the Gunners’ emphatic 5-1 victory against Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League. The Brazilian defender drew criticism for mimicking Sporting forward Viktor Gyökeres’ signature celebration, a move Ljungberg deemed unnecessary and disrespectful.

Speaking after the match, Ljungberg expressed his concerns about the gesture, saying, “I think it’s a bit disrespectful what Gabriel did. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I think someone else has that target gesture, leave it alone. I don’t like to see it.”

Gabriel had earlier scored Arsenal’s third goal of the evening with a powerful header from Declan Rice’s corner, extending the Gunners’ dominance in the first half. However, his post-goal celebration raised eyebrows as he mimicked Gyökeres’ “target” gesture, a signature move that the Sporting striker is known for.

While Arsenal’s performance was widely praised, Ljungberg’s comments highlighted the fine line between confidence and sportsmanship. The former Gunners midfielder, known for his professionalism during his playing days, suggested that such actions could provoke unnecessary tension or undermine respect between players.

Gabriel’s celebration has sparked debate among fans and pundits, with some defending it as harmless banter, while others, like Ljungberg, see it as poor sportsmanship. Despite the controversy, the Brazilian’s contribution to Arsenal’s commanding win cannot be overlooked, as the Gunners maintained their strong form in Europe.

As Arsenal prepare for their Premier League clash against West Ham United this weekend, it remains to be seen whether Gabriel will address the criticism or let his performances continue to speak on the pitch.
