Arsenal delivered a commanding performance in their UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon, securing a 5-1 victory at the Estádio José Alvalade. The Gunners, who sit fourth in the Premier League table, showcased their attacking prowess with five different scorers in a clinical display.
The match began with Arsenal asserting dominance. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the 7th minute, finishing off a precise low cross from Jurrien Timber after a slick combination with Declan Rice. Arsenal doubled their lead 15 minutes later as Bukayo Saka beat Sporting’s offside trap to set up Kai Havertz for an easy finish.
Before halftime, Gabriel Magalhães made it 3-0 with a powerful header from a Rice corner, marking his third goal of the season. Sporting briefly responded early in the second half, with Gonçalo Inácio capitalizing on a defensive lapse to pull one back from a Francisco Trincão corner.
However, Arsenal quickly regained control. Martin Ødegaard earned a penalty after being brought down by Ousmane Diomande, who was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card. Saka calmly converted the spot-kick, restoring the Gunners’ three-goal cushion.
The scoring was completed in the 82nd minute when Ander Merino’s powerful shot was parried by Antonio Adán, allowing Leandro Trossard to head home the rebound. Arsenal dominated throughout, finishing with a superior xG of 3.89 compared to Sporting’s 0.96.
This resounding victory sees Arsenal move to seventh in the Champions League standings, demonstrating their potential as serious contenders in Europe. Up next, Mikel Arteta’s side will shift focus back to the Premier League as they prepare to face West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday, November 30th. The Gunners will aim to carry this momentum into domestic competition as they chase glory on all fronts.
