Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that young midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly is the latest player to join the Gunners’ growing injury list. Speaking to the media after Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Dinamo Zagreb, Arteta revealed that the 17-year-old jarred his knee during training following the weekend’s clash with Aston Villa and was subsequently unavailable for selection.

According to The Standard, Lewis-Skelly’s knee issue occurred during training, where he was unable to complete the session. The talented teenager is now set to undergo further scans and tests to assess the extent of the injury, leaving Arsenal fans and Arteta himself hoping it is not another long-term setback.

Arteta shed light on the situation during his pre-match press conference. “Lewis-Skelly jarred his knee against Villa and could not finish training yesterday,” the Arsenal boss explained. “He’ll have more scans and tests tomorrow, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

The news comes as another blow for the Gunners, who are already grappling with injuries to key players such as Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Lewis-Skelly’s absence further compounds Arteta’s squad management challenges as Arsenal navigate a packed fixture schedule across multiple competitions.

A Promising Talent

Myles Lewis-Skelly has been one of the standout talents to emerge from Arsenal’s Hale End academy in recent years. The 17-year-old midfielder is highly regarded for his composure on the ball, tactical awareness, and ability to influence games from midfield.

Having made appearances for Arsenal’s senior team in pre-season and training regularly with the first team, Lewis-Skelly has been on the cusp of breaking into Arteta’s plans. His absence will be a disappointment for both the player and the manager, particularly during a period where rotation and squad depth are crucial to Arsenal’s campaign.

Growing Injury Concerns

The injury to Lewis-Skelly highlights Arsenal’s mounting fitness issues this season. The club’s medical team has been stretched, with several first-team players sidelined in recent weeks. Arteta’s squad has been further tested by a congested fixture list, including Premier League and Champions League commitments.

Injuries to key players like Saliba and Saka have already impacted Arsenal’s performances, and the addition of Lewis-Skelly to the injury list underscores the importance of managing player workloads effectively.

What’s Next for Arsenal?

Despite these challenges, Arsenal continue to show resilience. Their 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb demonstrated their ability to adapt, with players like Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard stepping up to lead the team. However, Arteta will need to rely on his remaining midfield options as the Gunners prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The hope for Arsenal fans is that Lewis-Skelly’s injury is not serious and that he can return to training soon. In the meantime, Arteta must make the most of his squad depth while juggling the demands of a highly competitive season.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s injury is a setback for Arsenal, but it also highlights the importance of squad depth during a challenging campaign. As the teenager awaits further tests, the Gunners will aim to maintain their momentum and stay competitive across all fronts. Arteta, no stranger to adversity, will undoubtedly be hoping for positive news regarding his promising young midfielder.
