Mikel Arteta Provides Update on Saka and Martinelli’s Availability for PSV Clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given an update on the potential return of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli ahead of next month’s UEFA Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven. Speaking to the media, Arteta admitted that their availability remains uncertain, stating that the final decision will depend on the medical team’s assessment in the coming weeks.
“I’m not sure, that’s a question for the doctors,” Arteta said when asked if either player could feature against PSV. “They are both evolving really well, probably Gabi is a bit ahead of Bukayo because of the extent of the injury.”
His comments suggest that while both players are making positive progress in their recoveries, there is still uncertainty about whether they will be ready in time for the crucial European fixture.
A Race Against Time
Saka and Martinelli have both been key figures for Arsenal this season, playing pivotal roles in the club’s Premier League and Champions League campaigns. However, their injuries have left the Gunners slightly short in attacking options, forcing Arteta to rotate his squad carefully.
Saka, who has been struggling with a knee injury, has missed a few key games, while Martinelli, dealing with his own fitness issues, has been progressing slightly ahead of his teammate in recovery. The fact that Arteta mentioned Martinelli’s injury was less severe than Saka’s suggests that the Brazilian may have a better chance of returning in time for the PSV match.
Key Considerations Before Their Return
Arteta emphasized that Arsenal will monitor both players closely in the weeks leading up to the PSV clash. “Then we will have to see the next steps & the previous weeks before that, how the boys are feeling & what we are prepared to do,” he explained.
The Arsenal medical staff will play a crucial role in determining whether it is worth the risk to bring Saka and Martinelli back for the game against the Dutch side. With Arsenal aiming for success in both the Premier League and Champions League, ensuring the duo’s long-term fitness will be a priority.
Impact on Arsenal’s Attack
Without Saka and Martinelli, Arsenal has had to rely on other attacking options. Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus have stepped up in their absence, while Kai Havertz has also been deployed in different attacking roles. However, Saka’s ability to create chances and Martinelli’s pace on the left flank have been missed, especially in tight matches where Arsenal needed more cutting-edge in the final third.
A Crucial Fixture in Arsenal’s European Journey
The match against PSV could be a defining moment in Arsenal’s Champions League campaign. While the Gunners have shown resilience in their group-stage performances, having Saka and Martinelli back would provide a massive boost.
Arteta and his coaching staff will be hoping that both players continue their recovery smoothly, but for now, it remains a waiting game. Arsenal fans will be keeping a close eye on any updates, hoping to see their star wingers return in time for the important European showdown.
