Mikel Arteta’s Shock Plan: Arsenal Midfielder to Be Used as Emergency Striker!
Mikel Arteta is always looking for tactical solutions, and the latest idea emerging from Arsenal’s training ground is a bold one—using Mikel Merino as an emergency striker. The Spaniard, who arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2024, has impressed with his physicality, technical ability, and aerial dominance, traits that Arteta believes could be valuable in an attacking role if needed.
Reports indicate that Arteta sees similarities between Merino and Marouane Fellaini, a player he shared the pitch with during his time at Everton. Fellaini, primarily a midfielder, was often deployed as a makeshift striker by both David Moyes at Everton and later José Mourinho at Manchester United. His ability to dominate in the air, hold up play, and cause chaos in the box made him an effective plan B when teams needed a different approach.

Merino, while not a traditional forward, possesses similar attributes. Standing at 6’2”, he is strong in the air and comfortable playing with his back to goal. His ability to win aerial duels and link up play could make him a valuable asset in games where Arsenal need an alternative route to goal.
This experiment comes at a time when Arsenal are struggling with injuries in attack. Gabriel Jesus has been dealing with fitness issues, while Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have both missed games this season. With limited attacking options, Arteta is exploring different solutions, and Merino’s versatility makes him a potential option.
Of course, Arsenal’s primary plan remains their intricate, fluid attacking style, but having an alternative approach can be crucial in a title race. Whether Merino actually gets minutes as a striker remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Arteta is prepared for any scenario.
