Arteta Confirms Arsenal Star to Miss Ipswich Clash, Targeting Return for PSG Showdown

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Riccardo Calafiori will not be part of the squad for the Gunners’ upcoming Premier League clash against Ipswich Town this weekend. The 22-year-old Italian defender, who has become a key part of Arteta’s system this season, is still recovering from injury and will sit out Saturday’s game.

Speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference, Arteta gave an update on Calafiori’s fitness and outlined the club’s plan to ensure he returns at the right time.

“Richy [Calafiori] probably is NOT going to be available [to face Ipswich],” Arteta said. “If everything goes well, I think so [back to face PSG], maybe a little bit earlier, so let’s see.”

While Calafiori won’t be available for this weekend’s game, there is optimism around his condition. The defender has already returned to light training, working on the pitch and progressing well in his recovery. Arteta stressed the importance of not rushing him back too quickly.

“He’s on the pitch already, he’s done quite a lot of stuff & we just need to make the right steps now to make sure that when he’s back, he’s in a good place to perform,” the Arsenal boss added.

Calafiori, who arrived at Arsenal last summer and quickly adapted to life in the Premier League, has been one of the revelations of the season. His composure on the ball, positional awareness, and defensive intelligence have been vital to Arsenal’s strong performances across all competitions. His absence will be a blow, particularly in a period where every point and every match carries massive weight in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

However, Arteta’s comments provide reassurance that the injury isn’t a long-term concern. With the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain looming on April 29, Arsenal are hopeful that Calafiori will be available to face the French champions — a game where his defensive quality and tactical discipline could prove crucial.

In the meantime, Arsenal still have depth in defence. Jakub Kiwior and William Saliba are expected to partner in central defence against Ipswich, while Jurrien Timber and Ben White offer additional options. Nevertheless, Calafiori’s versatility, capable of playing both centrally and at left-back, offers Arteta tactical flexibility that will be missed in his absence.

As Arsenal continue to chase silverware on multiple fronts, careful management of player fitness is essential. With the season approaching its climax, Arteta is clearly prioritizing long-term impact over short-term availability — especially with the magnitude of the PSG ties.

For now, Arsenal fans will have to wait a little longer to see Calafiori back in action. But if all goes according to plan, his return will come at just the right time — and could play a decisive role in what has the potential to be a historic season for the Gunners.
