Arsenal’s New Lamine Yamal? Cristhian Mosquera Drops Huge Praise on Arteta’s Young Star

Cristhian Mosquera has made waves with a bold comparison, likening Arsenal youngster Max Dowman to Barcelona’s sensation Lamine Yamal. The defender’s praise for the 15-year-old Hale End talent reveals not just admiration, but also belief in Dowman’s potential to become world-class.

The Yamal comparison that turns heads

“I don’t mean to compare, but Max’s style and way of playing is like Lamine Yamal. His movements are Lamine-esque,” Mosquera said. Immediately, that sets expectations—and it’s clear Dowman has already caught the interest of his teammates with his agility, speed, and attacking instincts. To be compared to Yamal isn’t light praise, but from Mosquera, it doesn’t appear exaggerated.

What adds weight to the comparison is how Dowman has already impressed at senior training levels. “I didn’t have him on my radar and when I got to Singapore, he was already training and playing.” Dowman’s presence on the pre-season tour so early in his development demonstrated both his readiness and the club’s trust in him.

Astonishing maturity for 15

When Mosquera learned Dowman was only 15, he was astonished. “When they told me he was 15, I couldn’t believe it. He really is an incredible player, and I think he’s going to be world-class.” That kind of statement from a peer already playing senior football carries weight. Dowman’s technical skill, decision-making, and composure in training are all being noted as far beyond what many expect at his age.

He also didn’t shy away from recognising the wider picture, including praise for other young Arsenal talents. “You see 17- and 18-year-olds like Myles Lewis-Skelly or Ethan Nwaneri, and they play like they’re 30, like they’ve been playing football their whole lives. It’s incredible.” The point is that Arsenal’s emerging crop are not only talented, but unusually mature in their approach to the game.

The road ahead and the burden of comparison

Comparisons to stars like Yamal come with pressure. Dowman will now be under close scrutiny—every touch, every dribble, every decision in games will be watched. But Mosquera’s praise suggests that Dowman has already shown enough glimpses to merit attention and belief.

Arteta’s management of Dowman will be key. He needs playing time, coaching, and a pathway that doesn’t rush him but still gives him exposure. The club clearly sees this as more than hype. They have allowed Dowman to train with senior squads, entrusted him in pre-season, and given him minutes where possible.

Why this matters for Arsenal’s future

Arsenal have long relied on youth to balance experience, and having a teen of Dowman’s profile promises to deepen that tradition. If he develops as Mosquera believes he can, he could become an attacking option in the style of Yamal—fast, skillful, unpredictable, and dangerous.

Even if Dowman doesn’t reach Yamal’s heights, the fact that such comparisons are being made this early is itself telling: Arsenal see special potential. For Dowman, the task now is simple—keep working, stay humble, embrace opportunity, and let performances speak. If he continues like this, expectations may soon feel less like comparisons, and more like predictions.
