Unai Emery gives reason for not using Lucas Torreira at season open
Arsenal signed Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria in the summer after having been linked with him for months. Arsenal fans were watching his videos on YouTube and eagerly waited for an official statement from Arsenal about signing the Uruguayan international.
The gunners completed the deal in July after the FIFA World Cup but Lucas Torreira did not join his new teammates on their pre-season tour but he was already back when the gunners welcomed Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal fans expected him to be on the lineup that faced the defending champions but Unai Emery opted to not starting him, he again didn’t select him on the starting eleven that played against Chelsea.
Unai Emery has however revealed the exact reason why he did not start using Lucas Torreira right away in the Premier League. Here’s what he said when asked about that;
“Because you have to respect hierarchies. If Leno comes as a signing but Cech is doing well, we have to respect him. Petr was first. And the same happened with Guendouzi and Torreira, who arrived later.” Unai Emery told Marca.
“I kept the first one, which I love, although now I do not play, and yes Lucas.”
Lucas Torreira has proved himself in the following matches after their defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea and many Arsenal legends have said that the former Sampdoria midfielder has helped the gunners maintain their unbeaten run of 16 matches.
