Report: Why Lucas Torreira made no impact in loss to Southampton

Lucas Torreira is Arsenal’s best summer signing this year and he has been impressive in the last few months but he was nowhere to be seen in their 3-2 defeat to Southampton who totally outclassed the gunners in the midfield. The gunners started with a 3-4-3 formation and one would want to see more of the Uruguayan international but he didn’t make much impact.
But the real reason why Lucas Torreira didn’t impress against Southampton was MATTEO GUENDOUZI. Unai Emery used Granit Xhaka as a centre back on Sunday because of the absence of Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos so Lucas Torreira was paired with Matteo Guendouzi in the midfield.

Matteo Guendouzi is an outstanding teenager who has confidence but he is still a bit inexperienced because he at times forgets his rightful position and is seen everywhere on the pitch hence putting too much pressure on Lucas Torreira who had to work hard to stop the strong midfielders of Southampton.
As much as we’ve said that Lucas Torreira helps Granit Xhaka perform well on the pitch but the real truth is that they need each other to make a perfect combination, the gunners have conceded many goals when these two aren’t paired together, for example, the Manchester United game where they conceded two quick goals.
Arsenal has seen this defeat coming and the fans will be hoping that it opens up the eyes of Unai Emery so that he makes some adjustments in his squad.
