Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to make a third January signing amid concerns that experienced midfielder Mohamed Elneny could miss the rest of the season. The Metro UK reports that Elneny is currently sidelined with an injury and his return date is uncertain and that it is the reason why Mikel Arteta will wish to sign a new midfielder before the end of the window.

Arteta has already signed Brighton & Hove Albion winger Leandro Trossard and centre back Jakub Kiwior from Spezia in this January transfer window, but he is now looking to add another player to his squad. With Elneny’s injury, Arteta wants to ensure that he has enough cover in midfield for the remainder of the season as its a key position.

Elneny might not be a regular starter for Arsenal in the Premier League but he is still Arsenal’s only senior central midfielder in the squad and Mikel Arteta will wish to prepare for the worst case scenario as an injury to either Granit Xhaka or Thomas Partey would send their season into disarray.

The Gunners have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks, including Brighton & Hove Albion central midfielder Moises Caicedo but they will however have to face competition from their London rivals Chelsea.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will be able to make any more signings before the end of January, but it appears that Arteta is determined to bolster his squad ahead of what promises to be an exciting second half of the season for the Gunners.
