Wenger reveals his disagreement with Arteta on his handling of his players
Arsenal former manager Arsene Wenger has opened up on his disagreement with Mikel Arteta on how he has handled some of his players this season.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has shared his thoughts on the recent discussion about Mikel Arteta’s decision to rotate goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya. The Frenchman, who managed the gunners for 22 years, believes that there should be a clear hierarchy when it comes to goalkeepers and that rotation in this position does not work.
Wenger’s comments come after Arteta stated that he would rotate Ramsdale and Raya like other players in different positions. Ramsdale, who was Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper at the start of the season, has since been replaced by Raya who arrived in the summer. The Spanish shot-stopper has impressed with his performances.
“I don’t believe in rotation with goalkeepers, I don’t believe in a lack of clarity of the hierarchy with goalkeepers. That doesn’t work.” Wenger said on BeIn Sports.
However, Wenger believes that Ramsdale should not give up and has the chance to regain his spot in the starting lineup. The 25-year-old Englishman has shown great potential and has the ability to bounce back from this setback. Wenger himself has a history of giving young players a chance and nurturing them into top-class performers.
Arsenal are currently in 2nd position on the Premier League table with 24 points in the 2023/24 campaign. Their recent game against Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium ended in a resounding 5-0 victory for the gunners. This result further solidified their position as title contenders this season. However, their next game will be a tough test as they face West Ham United in the Carabao Cup round of 16 at The London Stadium on Saturday.
It will be interesting to see if Arteta sticks with Raya or gives Ramsdale a chance to prove himself once again. But one thing is for sure, both goalkeepers will have to fight for their place in the team and prove their worth to the manager.
In conclusion, Wenger’s comments on the rotation of goalkeepers may hold some weight as having a clear hierarchy in this position can bring stability and confidence to the team. However, it is ultimately up to Arteta to decide how he wants to manage his goalkeepers and it will be intriguing to see how this situation unfolds in the coming weeks.
