Pep Guardiola makes interesting statement on Arteta’s criticism of match officials
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta recently criticized officials after their performance in the game of the gunners against Newcastle and Guardiola has commented on it.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has come to the defence of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who recently criticized match officials after a controversial goal allowed Newcastle United to defeat Arsenal in a Premier League match. Guardiola expressed his support for Arteta and discussed the challenges that managers face when dealing with high emotions immediately after a game.
Speaking to the media, Guardiola acknowledged the confusion surrounding various aspects of the game in different countries. He stated, “I have the feeling that in every country there’s a little bit of confusion about many things.” When asked about the state of VAR following Arteta’s comments, Guardiola emphasized that it is difficult for managers to handle their emotions right after a game.
Guardiola further explained, “The emotion after the game is difficult for the managers right after, being here and talking about the feelings that are so, so high. It’s not easy.” He highlighted his own experience and made it clear that he was speaking for himself rather than on behalf of Arteta or any other manager.
The Manchester City manager expressed hope for improvement in addressing these issues. He mentioned that restrictions on communication with fourth officials have limited their ability to influence decisions. Guardiola noted that this situation has remained largely unchanged from last season.
Turning attention to Arsenal’s current position in the Premier League table, they currently sit in 4th place with 24 points in this 2023/24 campaign. Their recent match against Newcastle United at St James Park ended in a 1-0 defeat for Arsenal, marking their first loss in the league this season.
Looking ahead, Arsenal will face Sevilla in an upcoming UEFA Champions League match at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. The Gunners will be eager to bounce back from their recent defeat and secure a positive result against Sevilla.
In conclusion, Pep Guardiola’s support for Mikel Arteta highlights the challenges faced by managers when dealing with high emotions immediately after games. The Manchester City boss also expressed hope for improvements regarding communication with officials. As Arsenal prepares for their next match against Sevilla, they will aim to regain momentum and continue their strong performance in both domestic and European competitions.
