As England’s national football team gears up for the highly anticipated Euro 2024 final against Spain this Sunday, midfielder Declan Rice has opened up about the haunting memory of their previous Euros disappointment and the team’s determination to write a new chapter in their history.

Speaking to the Mail, Rice revealed that the sight of Italy lifting the trophy at Euro 2020 will “haunt [him] forever.” However, the Arsenal star insisted that this time, the Three Lions are better equipped to navigate the final hurdle.

“We are now presented with another opportunity where we can write our own history,” said Rice. “We are just so desperate to do it, not only for each other, but also for the manager. I think he deserves it.”

The 25-year-old acknowledged the lessons learned from the last Euros, where England sat back and allowed Italy to dominate possession. This time, Rice believes the team’s improved ball-control and the effectiveness of their back-five system will prove crucial in their quest for glory.

“We know now what we have to do, compared to last time in terms of how to control the game, not to sit back like we did when Italy came onto us,” he explained. “We know how we can win this final, which I think is a positive.”

Despite the magnitude of the occasion, Rice exuded confidence in England’s ability to overcome the Spanish challenge. “It is a game we believe we can win, so it is poised to be a great final,” he said.

The midfielder’s unwavering determination to bring happiness to the country is palpable, as he vowed to leave everything on the pitch. “There is one more in our legs to give absolutely everything – for the boys, for the fans & for this manager. We are so desperate to do this & bring some happiness to the country.”

As the curtain rises on the Euro 2024 final, Declan Rice and his England teammates will be driven by the memory of their past heartbreak, fueling their desire to rewrite their nation’s history and clinch the elusive international trophy.
