Arsenal’s opponents for new and improved Champions League format revealed
Arsenal’s 2024/25 Champions League journey begins with a challenging group stage featuring familiar rivals like PSG, Inter Milan, and Atalanta, as well as new opponents like Dinamo Zagreb and Girona. However, the true excitement lies in the new format of the competition itself.
The Gunners will face:
Home: PSG, Shakhtar, Dinamo Zagreb, AS Monaco, Girona
Away: Inter Milan, Atalanta, Sporting CP
This season, the Champions League ditches the traditional group stage for a single league table, encompassing all 36 participating teams. This means more matches, more opportunities for upsets, and a more dynamic race for qualification.
The top eight teams in the league automatically qualify for the round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged play-off to secure their place in the last 16. This new structure ensures more drama and competition throughout the season, with every point crucial for progress.
The knockout phase sees the league’s final rankings influence the draw, with the 9th to 16th placed teams seeded against those ranked 17th to 24th in the play-off round. The eight play-off winners join the top eight for the round of 16, creating a truly interconnected competition.
The knockout rounds will continue in their traditional format, with home and away matches leading to the final, which will remain on a Saturday at a neutral venue. This evolution ensures more teams experience the thrill of the Champions League while retaining the core principles of the competition. Arsenal, with their tough group and the added excitement of the new format, are set for a thrilling journey in the 2024/25 Champions League.
