€32million star completes medical with Arsenal as fans await announcement
Mikel Merino, 28, has officially become an Arsenal player after completing his medical and signing his contract. The deal, which has been in the works for several weeks, is now finalized with clubs exchanging documents and sealing the transfer as per journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Spanish midfielder joins the Gunners for a fixed fee of €32 million, with a further €5 million in potential add-ons. He has signed a contract until June 2028, with an option for an additional season.
Merino becomes Arsenal’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of Italian full-back Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. The Gunners were keen to strengthen their midfield and saw Merino’s experience and versatility as a perfect fit for their squad.
The former Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund star brings a wealth of experience to the Emirates Stadium, having established himself as a key figure in La Liga and the Bundesliga. His ability to play in a variety of midfield roles, including defensive midfielder and central midfielder, will provide Mikel Arteta with tactical flexibility.
Merino’s arrival signals Arsenal’s ambition to compete on multiple fronts this season, having secured a second-place finish in the Premier League last year. He is expected to slot seamlessly into the Gunners’ midfield, offering both defensive solidity and creative spark, adding further depth and quality to an already impressive squad.
