Edu and Arteta’s main priority transfer target named as Arsenal look for new signings

With the transfer window in full swing, Arsenal technical director Edu is prioritizing the signing of a central midfielder, with Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino emerging as a leading target, according to The Mirror.
The Gunners are aiming to strengthen their midfield depth and provide manager Mikel Arteta with more options in the middle of the park. Merino, a versatile and experienced midfielder who scored five goals and provided three assists for Real Sociedad last season, fits the profile Arsenal are looking for.
While the midfield remains the primary focus, Arsenal are also open to adding attacking reinforcements, with the club exploring options for a wide forward or a striker. However, any move for an attacker is likely to be contingent on departures from the current squad.
Arsenal have already made one signing this summer, bringing in left-back Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee believed to be around €45 million. The arrival of Calafiori signifies Arsenal’s ambition to strengthen the squad, but the club is focused on adding further depth and quality to their midfield.
The pursuit of Mikel Merino, alongside potential attacking additions, suggests Arsenal’s strategic approach to bolstering their squad. Edu’s focus on reinforcing the midfield, coupled with the potential for attacking signings, indicates a well-defined strategy as Arsenal prepare for a challenging 2024/25 season.
The Gunners will be looking to build on their impressive performance last season, aiming to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title. The addition of a central midfielder, along with potential attacking reinforcements, could prove crucial in their pursuit of silverware.
