Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League. The win came courtesy of an own goal in the first half, ensuring the Gunners maintained their unbeaten run in the competition and continued their strong defensive form, having kept clean sheets in all three of their group-stage matches.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 29th minute after Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli created a moment of danger on the left wing. The Brazilian winger cut inside and unleashed a shot that struck the post, only for the ball to ricochet off Shakhtar goalkeeper Riznyk and roll into the back of the net, giving Arsenal the lead. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the Gunners were unable to extend their advantage before halftime.

Arsenal continued to control the game in the second half but struggled to convert their dominance into more goals. Kai Havertz played a key role in linking up play, and Martinelli remained a constant threat on the left flank. However, Shakhtar’s defense held firm, and Arsenal were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, underperforming their expected goals (xG) of 1.97.

Shakhtar Donetsk showed signs of life in the closing stages, with Pedrinho and Marlon forcing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into action. A saved penalty from substitute Leandro Trossard could have put the game out of reach, but the Gunners managed to hold on and secure the win.

With this victory, Arsenal move up to fourth place in the Champions League standings, continuing their push for qualification to the knockout stages. Their next match is a crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
