Arteta speaks out on what caused Arsenal’s loss to Newcastle United
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. In a match where Arsenal aimed to assert themselves, the game was decided by a single, decisive moment early on. Reflecting on the match, Arteta pointed out the contrasting phases and the key factors that led to the loss.
“We started the game really well. I think we were on top of it, we looked sharp, we looked alive,” Arteta noted. Arsenal began the match with promise, displaying energy and control. However, the turning point came when Newcastle capitalized on a direct play. “In one action, direct play, second ball which they are really good at. They put the ball in behind with an unbelievable cross and finish,” Arteta explained, acknowledging the quality of Alexander Isak’s goal from Anthony Gordon’s assist.
Following Newcastle’s goal, the momentum shifted significantly. Arteta admitted, “After that, momentum changes, the energy shifts, they know how they want to play, and it’s clear.” Despite efforts to regain their footing, Arsenal struggled to create consistent attacking threats. “We weren’t good enough and didn’t have enough answers… especially creating the threat that we needed,” Arteta said.
Arsenal did have late opportunities to equalize, with Mikel Merino, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Jesus coming close. “You are reliant on two or three big chances… Not enough threat to change the game in any moment and win it,” Arteta reflected, emphasizing the frustration of not converting chances when it mattered.
Arteta also credited Newcastle for their resilient performance, acknowledging that the hosts executed their game plan effectively. With this loss, Arsenal will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for a crucial Champions League clash against Inter Milan.
