Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed questions regarding Thomas Partey’s performance during their recent 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, in which Partey featured as a right-back. Arteta’s decision to deploy the Ghanaian midfielder in an unfamiliar defensive role drew attention, with many pondering whether it affected his overall impact on the game.

Reflecting on Partey’s performance, Arteta stated, “I’ll need to make that assessment once I have more clarity about where he struggled, but I don’t have the impression he struggled much.” This response suggests that Arteta was not immediately concerned with Partey’s display and viewed his contributions positively, despite the tactical adjustments.

Partey, who is primarily known for his prowess as a central midfielder, has been asked to step into defensive roles due to squad constraints. Arteta addressed this positional switch by adding via club’s official website, “Every time we have that situation with Thomas playing a different position because we don’t have another right-back at the moment, we’re always going to have that debate.” This highlights the adaptability Partey brings to the team and the challenges Arsenal currently face with squad depth, particularly in the defensive line.

Arteta was keen to emphasize his confidence in Partey’s abilities, praising him as a valuable asset to the squad: “Thomas is fantastic.” The manager’s remarks signal trust in the player’s versatility and reinforce that Partey’s performance was not a focal point for criticism.

As Arsenal navigates a demanding schedule and continues to manage injuries within the squad, the use of versatile players like Partey underscores Arteta’s tactical flexibility. Arsenal, currently 4th in the Premier League, will need such adaptability as they prepare for their upcoming Champions League clash against Inter Milan, seeking to rebound from the recent domestic setback.
