Real Madrid star Federico Valverde has opened up about his teenage dream of building a long-term future at Arsenal, revealing how close he came to joining the Gunners during a trial at the club. The Uruguayan midfielder, now one of the most sought-after players in world football, reflected on his brief stint at Arsenal in an interview.

“I was 16. I said: ‘That’s it. Arsenal is my club. I’m going to grow here,’” Valverde shared. “In Uruguay, the Premier League was watched a lot. I imagined a future there. I enjoyed it and trained with spectacular players.”

Valverde recalled how the experience left a lasting impression on him, particularly the support he received from Arsenal players at the time. “I don’t know if he’ll remember me, but Dibu [Emiliano Martinez] was one of the ones who helped me the most in everything, along with Bellerín, Alexis [Sánchez], and Cazorla,” Valverde added. “I didn’t know English, and they had to explain all the work to me.”

Despite his hopes of settling at Arsenal, the move ultimately didn’t materialize, and Valverde went on to join Real Madrid in 2016, where he has developed into a key player for the Spanish giants.

Valverde’s comments underline Arsenal’s reputation for identifying young talent, even if some promising prospects slip through their grasp. Reflecting on his journey, Valverde’s story serves as a reminder of the paths not taken in football and how they shape the careers of players at the highest level.

For Arsenal fans, it’s bittersweet to imagine what could have been if Valverde had fulfilled his dream of wearing the red and white jersey for the long term. However, his brief connection with the club highlights the impact Arsenal can have on young players during their formative years.
