Arsenal Manager Arteta Opens Up on Martín Zubimendi Deal and Midfield Reshaping for Next Season

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed recent reports surrounding the club’s potential pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi. There have been widespread rumors that Arsenal had already completed a deal to sign the Spanish international, although these claims remain unconfirmed. With the winter transfer window currently open, speculation has intensified around Zubimendi’s future, particularly given that Real Sociedad are reportedly unwilling to part with him this January.

Arteta, who has been instrumental in reshaping Arsenal’s squad in recent seasons, has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of any transfer negotiations. However, in his latest media interaction, the Spaniard did offer some insight into Arsenal’s approach to the upcoming transfer windows, particularly regarding the midfield department.

“We have some situations with contracts expiring,” Arteta said when questioned about potential moves for Zubimendi and other targets. “We have to be prepared.” These comments suggest that the club is already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, with the aim of strengthening areas of the squad that may require attention. The midfield, in particular, has been an area of focus for Arteta as he looks to build a balanced and dynamic team capable of challenging on multiple fronts.

Zubimendi, a product of Real Sociedad’s youth system, has emerged as one of Spain’s brightest midfield talents in recent seasons. His impressive performances in La Liga, particularly his composure on the ball, defensive contributions, and ability to dictate the tempo of matches, have earned him widespread recognition. The 24-year-old’s maturity on the pitch has made him an attractive option for top clubs across Europe, and Arsenal are reportedly one of the clubs keen to bring him to the Premier League.

However, Real Sociedad’s stance on Zubimendi remains clear: they are not interested in selling the player in the middle of the season. This presents a challenge for Arsenal, as Arteta is likely keen to add another central midfielder to his ranks, especially as the club prepares for an intense period of competition in the second half of the season. Given the current strength of their squad, Arteta may be willing to wait until the summer to make his move, when Zubimendi could be more open to a transfer.

Arteta’s comments on expiring contracts also allude to potential changes in the midfield area for next season. Arsenal has several key players whose contracts are set to run out, and their futures will be a critical factor in Arteta’s planning. Granit Xhaka, who has been an integral part of Arteta’s midfield for several seasons, could be one such player, although the Swiss international has yet to confirm his long-term plans with the club. Additionally, other squad members such as Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny, whose contracts may also be approaching their expiry dates, could influence the club’s decisions in the coming months.

As Arsenal continue their pursuit of silverware in both domestic and European competitions, strengthening the midfield will undoubtedly be a priority for Arteta. Whether or not Zubimendi is part of those plans remains to be seen, but the manager’s focus on being prepared for future challenges indicates that Arsenal’s midfield will undergo some reshaping in the near future. With a clear vision for the squad’s development, Arteta is laying the groundwork for sustained success at the Emirates, ensuring that Arsenal remain competitive in an ever-evolving Premier League.
