Arsenal receive good news ahead of their match against Manchester City

Arsenal have received a major boost ahead of their highly anticipated Premier League clash against Manchester City, as Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card has officially been overturned. The decision means the young midfielder will now be available for selection, providing Mikel Arteta with another option in midfield as the Gunners prepare to face the defending champions.
The Football Association (FA) has now published the written reasons behind the successful appeal, stating that the referee made an “obvious error” in sending off Lewis-Skelly. The decision to overturn the red card came after a detailed review of the incident, with the FA’s Independent Regulatory Commission concluding that the challenge did not meet the criteria for serious foul play.

In the official statement, the Commission explained their reasoning:
“The Commission members were unanimous in their opinion that the referee had made an obvious error in sending off MLS for the challenge that he had made.
“The challenge was certainly ‘Foul Play’ but it obviously could not, to the mind of the Commission, be categorised as having been ‘Serious Foul Play’.”
Further clarification was given on why the challenge did not warrant a straight red card:
“MLS had stepped across his opponent and tripped him up, possibly deliberately, but in doing so he had obviously not endangered the safety of his opponent or used excessive force or brutality, nor had he ‘lunged’ in at his opponent.”
This ruling ensures that Lewis-Skelly will face no suspension, allowing him to be available for the crucial match against Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.
The reversal of the red card is a relief for Arsenal, who felt that the initial decision was harsh. The club had referenced a similar incident involving Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes earlier in the season as part of their appeal, and the FA’s decision to overturn the dismissal suggests a level of consistency in how such cases are judged.
With Arsenal currently locked in a fierce battle at the top of the Premier League table, every player’s availability is crucial. Arteta will now have the option to include Lewis-Skelly in his matchday squad, which could prove valuable in a game of such high stakes.
The focus now shifts to Sunday’s showdown against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, where Arsenal will be aiming to close the gap at the top of the table. With Lewis-Skelly now cleared to play, the Gunners will be hoping for another big performance as they look to strengthen their title challenge.
