Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken out about his side’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, acknowledging Newcastle’s efficiency while defending his team’s overall performance.

The Gunners went into the game at the Emirates Stadium with high hopes of securing an advantage ahead of the second leg at St. James’ Park. However, goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon condemned Arsenal to a tough defeat, leaving them with a steep challenge to overturn the deficit.

Speaking to the media after the match, Arteta emphasized that the scoreline did not reflect the overall flow of the game, citing Newcastle’s ruthless efficiency in converting their limited chances.

“If you look at what both teams produced, it’s not a result that reflects the story of the game,” Arteta said. “The reality is that they were super-efficient with the chances they had.”

Arteta was referring to Newcastle’s ability to capitalize on their opportunities, with Isak’s clinical finish in the 37th minute and Gordon’s composed strike early in the second half making the difference. Despite enjoying more possession and creating several chances, Arsenal failed to find the back of the net.

Gabriel Martinelli came closest for the Gunners, hitting the post in the first half. Arsenal also had numerous opportunities through Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, and Martin Ødegaard, but Newcastle’s defense, marshaled by Sven Botman, stood strong.

The defeat puts Arsenal in a difficult position heading into the second leg, with the Gunners needing to score at least two goals at St. James’ Park to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive. Arteta, however, remained defiant, insisting that his team has the quality and resilience to fight back.

The loss comes as Arsenal continue to navigate a packed schedule, with the team currently sitting second in the Premier League and set to face Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday. Arteta urged his players to regroup and focus on the challenges ahead.

Despite the disappointment, Arsenal fans can take solace in the fact that their team created enough chances to trouble Newcastle and will hope for a more clinical display in the return leg.

For now, the Gunners will shift their attention to the FA Cup, where they face another stern test against an in-form Manchester United side. A response will be crucial as Arsenal aim to bounce back and keep their season on track.
