Bayern Munich have provided a crucial update on the future of Mathys Tel, a player who has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal in the final days of the January transfer window. Speaking to the media, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that the club expects Tel to stay beyond the transfer deadline.

“The current tendency is for Mathys Tel to stay,” Freund stated via media. “We are not in concrete negotiations with any club. If anything else happens, we will speak to him.”

This statement deals a blow to Arsenal, who were hoping to secure a late move for the 19-year-old forward. Tel has attracted significant interest from Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea, but Arsenal were seen as frontrunners due to their ongoing search for a new striker.

Why Arsenal Want Mathys Tel

Tel is regarded as one of the brightest young attacking talents in European football. The French forward has impressed in limited minutes for Bayern this season, contributing six goals across all competitions, despite primarily being used as a substitute.

Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen Arsenal’s attacking options, especially with the team in the middle of a Premier League title race and preparing for the Champions League knockout stages. While Arsenal have been linked with Ollie Watkins and Victor Osimhen, Tel’s versatility, pace, and technical ability make him an exciting option for the present and the future.

With Gabriel Jesus struggling with injuries and Eddie Nketiah no longer at the club, Arsenal need more depth in attack. Tel, who can play as a centre-forward or winger, would offer Arteta a dynamic and youthful alternative to lead the line.

Bayern’s Stance on Tel

Bayern Munich’s reluctance to part ways with Tel is understandable. Despite not being a regular starter under Thomas Tuchel, the young forward is viewed as a crucial part of the club’s long-term plans. With Harry Kane as the main striker, Tel has been gradually developing, learning from one of the best finishers in the game.

Freund’s statement makes it clear that Bayern are not actively looking to sell, and unless something drastic changes in the next few days, Tel is set to remain at the Allianz Arena.

What’s Next for Arsenal?

With Tel now looking unlikely to move, Arsenal may have to shift their focus to other targets before the window closes. The Gunners have also been linked with Jhon Duran, but reports suggest Aston Villa are unwilling to sell after already losing a striker this month.

Arteta recently stated that Arsenal are still exploring potential signings, but only if they find the right deal.

“I’m very confident with the work that the club is doing and exploring every single opportunity that we believe can have an impact on the team,” Arteta said.

With just a few days remaining in the transfer window, Arsenal must now decide whether to make another push for Tel, move on to other targets, or wait until the summer transfer window to reinforce their squad.
