Martinelli Reveals the Truth About Lewis-Skelly’s ‘Mocking’ Celebration Against Haaland

Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli has addressed speculation regarding Myles Lewis-Skelly’s celebration during Arsenal’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Manchester City. The 18-year-old midfielder made headlines for mimicking Erling Haaland’s signature celebration after scoring in the closing moments of the match, a moment that quickly went viral among fans.
Speaking after the game, Martinelli clarified that he was unsure whether Lewis-Skelly’s celebration was pre-planned but emphasized that the young midfielder has great respect for Haaland.
Martinelli Defends Lewis-Skelly
When asked about the incident, Martinelli told The Standard:
“I don’t know if the celebration was planned, but, for sure, he respects Erling a lot. He scored an amazing goal, and he has been brilliant recently. We are really happy for him.”
The celebration sparked widespread discussion, especially after reports surfaced that Haaland had previously taunted Lewis-Skelly in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium. However, Martinelli’s comments suggest that there was no ill intent behind the celebration, and instead, it was simply a moment of joy for a young player making a big impact in a massive game.

Beyond the discussion about Lewis-Skelly’s celebration, Martinelli also spoke about the competitive nature of the game, highlighting the intensity required to secure such a dominant win over Manchester City.
“It is two teams that want to win the championship, so that’s a fight. We tried our best, and they tried their best as well. We have to win duels to win these games and that’s why the game becomes hard work. We did well, and we are really happy with the result.”
With Arsenal currently pushing to challenge for the Premier League title, their victory over City was a statement of intent. The team showed resilience, determination, and attacking brilliance, key qualities needed for a successful title challenge.
Arsenal’s Belief and Squad Depth
Despite injuries to key players, Martinelli expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and ability to compete at the highest level. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but reiterated that the team is fully focused on winning the Premier League.
“We know our qualities, the team that we have. Even though we have some players injured, we know the quality we have in the team and we are trying our best for the club, for the players that are injured, and for the fans, too. We still have a long journey to go, many games to go, but we are going to try to do our best to win the league.”
This determination will be crucial as Arsenal prepare for their upcoming fixtures, aiming to maintain their momentum and keep up with their title rivals.
A Defining Moment in Arsenal’s Season
The victory over Manchester City has given Arsenal a significant boost in their title charge. Myles Lewis-Skelly’s goal and celebration might have stolen the headlines, but as Martinelli pointed out, the bigger picture is Arsenal’s collective effort and hunger to win the Premier League.
With more crucial games ahead, the Gunners will look to build on this result and continue their push for domestic glory.
