Arsenal Receive Good News Just Hours To The Game Against PSG

As Arsenal prepare for their biggest match in over a decade, Gunners fans have received a timely morale boost just hours before kick-off in Paris. Ahead of the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain, an intriguing and worrying trend has resurfaced for the French giants—PSG have never won a home semi-final in Europe’s elite competition.

For all their domestic dominance and deep runs in Europe, PSG’s record at this crucial stage is shockingly poor when they play in front of their own fans. In fact, history shows a perfect record—for their opponents.

In 1994/95, PSG hosted Italian giants AC Milan in the first leg of the semi-finals. With hopes high at the Parc des Princes, Milan stunned the French side with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a clinical defensive display and a goal that put PSG on the back foot. The Parisians couldn’t recover in the return leg, eventually crashing out.

Fast forward to 2020/21—PSG had reached the final the year before and were desperate to go one better. But again, in the semi-final first leg at home, they faced a relentless Manchester City side. Despite going 1-0 up, Pep Guardiola’s men turned the tide with a dominant second half to win 2-1 and effectively kill the tie before it reached English soil.

And it happened again just last season. In 2023/24, PSG welcomed Borussia Dortmund to Paris with another final firmly in sight. But the Germans were ruthless, defending deep, attacking with precision, and walking away with a shock 1-0 victory. The pressure on PSG at home, in front of their demanding fans, proved too much—again.

This trio of failures casts a long shadow over PSG’s chances tonight. And for Arsenal fans, it offers hope.

The Gunners travel to Paris knowing they need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at the Emirates. While the task is difficult, the knowledge that PSG have never delivered in this scenario on home soil could serve as added fuel for Mikel Arteta’s young and hungry side. Mental fragility in these high-stakes moments has plagued the Ligue 1 giants for years—and Arsenal will be keen to exploit it.

There’s also a strong sense that this Arsenal side is ready to rise to the occasion. With a fully fit Declan Rice leading the midfield, captain Martin Ødegaard determined to respond to recent criticism, and Mikel Arteta urging his players to “give their life” for the club’s first UCL final since 2006, belief is growing in the red half of North London.

If history is anything to go by, PSG’s glitzy home record means little when it matters most. Arsenal will be hoping to extend the curse—and book their place in the final.
