Arsenal Nearing Completion of Viktor Gyökeres Deal as Bonus Talks Progress

Arsenal are edging closer to finalising the signing of Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP, with negotiations over the structure of bonuses that could take the overall value of the transfer to around £68 million now nearing a conclusion.

The Gunners have long identified the 27-year-old Swedish striker as a priority target to bolster their forward line ahead of the 2025/26 season. Talks with Sporting have been progressing in recent weeks, and according to journalist Ed Aarons, the two clubs are now deep in discussions regarding the add-ons that would complete the deal.

Gyökeres has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, having made it clear he is keen on the move. The striker has been eager to return to the Premier League and sees the Emirates as the ideal next step in his career. Having scored prolifically in Portugal last season — with 29 goals and 11 assists across all competitions — he is widely seen as one of Europe’s most in-form forwards.

The proposed transfer fee includes an initial guaranteed payment, believed to be in the region of £58 million, with bonuses and performance-related add-ons potentially pushing the total to £68 million. These bonuses are currently the final hurdle, with both clubs close to settling on the targets and clauses that would trigger the additional payments.

Sporting have remained firm during negotiations, pointing to Gyökeres’ exceptional output since arriving from Coventry City and his €100 million release clause. However, they are understood to be satisfied with the overall package Arsenal are offering, especially with the player himself pushing for the move.

Mikel Arteta is said to be a driving force behind the deal, viewing Gyökeres as a powerful, mobile striker who can offer something different from his current attacking options. The Arsenal manager is looking to add more physical presence and directness to his front line, and Gyökeres’ blend of strength, pace, and finishing ability is seen as a perfect match for the team’s tactical evolution.

The signing would also provide Arsenal with a long-term solution at centre-forward, an area that has lacked consistency. Gabriel Jesus has struggled with injuries and form, while Kai Havertz, although impressive at times, is viewed more as a hybrid option than a traditional number nine.

If the bonus talks are successfully wrapped up, Gyökeres could undergo his medical and complete the move in the coming days, joining the Gunners in time for pre-season preparations. Arsenal are hoping to integrate him quickly into the squad to ensure a smooth transition ahead of a demanding new campaign that includes another run at the Premier League title and Champions League football.

The deal represents another significant statement of intent from Arsenal, who continue to invest in building a squad capable of challenging at the highest level. With Viktor Gyökeres now on the brink of joining, the Gunners look set to secure one of the summer’s biggest transfers.

I am a very stubborn person who is always very argumentative in football discussions but I always win. I like writing about transfer news most.
