Analysis: Should Unai Emery sign anyone this January?

Arsenal has had a good season so far if you consider how Unai Emery is managing a club that was coached by the same person for two decades but the question is: should Unai Emery sign new players in January?

All teams that have managed to consistently play at a high level have got something in common. These teams have depth in their squads. Depth creates competition among the players and it also creates cover in the case of injuries.

When Unai Emery joined Arsenal from France, many pundits had mentioned that Unai needed at least three transfer Windows to compete for top four positions. Almost half way through the season, Unai has proved them wrong. This is not say that Arsenal is at Manchester City’s level. I feel that despite the good work so far, they still need at least three players to come compete for the Premier League trophy.

One reason I am saying that is that Arsenal needs a natural winger because as much as they play Aubameyang on the wings, that is not his best position. Arsenal needs to recruit a winger as soon as January. While some insist on recalling Reiss Nelson in January, I would rather see him play two more seasons in Germany, that would be ideal for a young player who is just learning without much pressure on his shoulders.

Arsenal may also have to bring in a back up striker to provide cover for its two strikers if the Eddie Nketia experiment doesn’t yield any tangible results. The striking department is so critical because when the fatigue starts kicks in, we may see the goals become less and the frustration become more. Thus a third man will be needed to continue the scoring responsibility.

One very interesting area is the gap created if Aaron Ramsey is sold in the January transfer window. This move suits the board best than letting Ramsey go on a free transfer. It would be best to replace him with alike players who can play in the central attacking midfield roles.

I am not sure if Unai will recruit in all the areas I have mentioned, but I feel it is important that altleast one area of the team is reinforced to sustain the challenge for Silverware.
