Arsenal are in a rut, the club is having their worst start to a league campaign in decades. A 2-2 draw with Southampton leaves Arsenal winless in 5 Premier League matches.Unai Emery had the international break to go back to the drawing board and come up with a solution for the crisis and a home game against 19th placed Southampton looked like an assured win, it turned out to be the opposite as Arsenal trailed twice and should have lost the game had Lacazette’s 96th minute goal not happened.
Arsenal looked like they hadn’t changed or learnt anything during the break and looked sloppy and fragile especially defensively. Emery started the game with a defensive approach with 5 defenders once again but that did not stop Southampton from registering 21 shots. Unai eventually through the kitchen sink at the opposition bringing on Pepe, Willock and Martinelli in the second half as Arsenal trailed 2-1 and the latter set up Lacazette’s goal as Willock made a goal line clearance to stop what should have been Southampton’s third goal.
The question now is who should be accountable for Arsenal’s slump, it is clear that Unai Emery isn’t the right man for the job and is not the man to take Arsenal to the next level as a fact Arsenal are actually going backwards under Unai. But somehow the board members are the only people who still think he’s the right person and are stubbornly reluctant to make the ruthless decision of sacking Unai Emery. The club lacks a direction now and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon.
Arsenal look miles away from their season objective now which is to return to the Champions League and look like they’ll have to rely on the Europa League once again to achieve this objective. Nothing looks bright for the club and it is up to Raul Sanllehi and Vinai Venkatesham to make the call to bring an end to Emery’s reign which has no clear hope.
