The Premier League confirmed yesterday that this season would be finished and Arsenal have released a statement supporting this decision.
The Premier League announced yesterday that it would no longer be returning at the start of May since it wasn’t a guarantee that the COVID-19 virus would have been defeated. The Premier League has then decided that there won’t be a specific date for its return but that it would however complete this season as soon as its safe, Arsenal have shown their support for that decision.
There has been a lot of confusion on whether the 2019/20 Premier League season will be completed and there has been rumours that if it was made null and void then Arsenal would be able to get a UEFA Champions League spot since Manchester City are banned from UEFA competitions and they finished fifth last season. It is believed that Champions League spots would be chosen according to last season’s Premier League table.
The gunners have been poor this season as they are currently in the ninth position and the fans could obviously want this campaign to be null and void so that they can start a fresh but the club has a different view as it has publicly backed the Premier League in wanting the 2019/20 season to be completed.
“As a club, we are in full support of the objective for all remaining domestic league and cup matches from the 2019/20 season to be played, in order to maintain the integrity of each competition.” read a statement from Arsenal as per Football.London.
“We also fully agree with the principle that any return to action will only be with the full backing of Government and when medical guidance allows.”
As for now, the Premier League will not go ahead until it is cleared to be safe by the government but the decision to continue this season means that the upcoming season will be affected since most experts claim that the last games of this campaign might only be able to be played in July and August after the peak of COVID-19.
