Arsenal’s fixture list and Champions League qualification chances as Premier League returns

The Premier League is set to return at long last after it was put to a standstill by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Arsenal were supposed to play against Manchester City on March 11 however, on the evening of March 10 all European football matches were postponed due to fear of the spread of the Coronavirus.

A few days later Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta tested positive for Coronavirus leading to the indefinite suspension of English football.

After three and a half months Premier League football will finally return on June 17 with matches set to be played behind closed doors as one of the measures to mitigate the spread of the virus.

The Premier League will start exactly were it stopped with Arsenal travelling to the Etihad stadium to take on Manchester City on June 17 which is a game in hand.

Arsenal will face the big teams Liverpool, Man City and Tottenham while Leicester and Wolves might turn out to be tricky opposition.

Norwich, Brighton, Southampton, Villa and Watford should be winnable games for the Gunners.

Arsenal will face an uphill battle in their quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League and will have to be victorious against the big teams as well as matches away from home.

Arsenal sit 9th on the table with 40 points from 28 matches and a game in hand.

8 points separate Arsenal from fourth placed Chelsea and the good news is fifth position could secure Champions League qualification should Manchester City’s UEFA ban be upheld.

Regardless of the situation Arsenal’s Champions League qualification chances are far-fetched considering this season has been awful.

Arsenal have managed to win only 9 matches out of 28 and might have to settle for another season in the Europa League or even no European football at all as the realistic options.
