One of the genius moves that former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger made in the past was the decision to sell Nicolas Anelka to Real Madrid in August 1999. At the time, Anelka was one of the most promising young talents in world football, and his sale for £22.5m was seen as a bold move by Wenger.

The sale of Anelka not only brought in a significant amount of money for Arsenal, but it also allowed Wenger to fund two important projects for the club. Firstly, the sale helped finance the construction of the London Colney training facility, which cost around £10m. This state-of-the-art facility has since become an integral part of Arsenal’s infrastructure and has played a crucial role in the development of their players.

Secondly, Wenger used a portion of the funds from Anelka’s sale to bring in another French striker, Thierry Henry, for £11m. At the time, Henry was playing for Juventus and had not yet reached his full potential. However, Wenger saw something special in him and believed that he could flourish at Arsenal.

Wenger’s decision to invest in Henry turned out to be a stroke of genius. The Frenchman went on to become one of the greatest players in Arsenal’s history, scoring a record 228 goals for the club and playing a key role in their success during the early 2000s. Henry’s pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability made him a nightmare for opposition defenders and helped Arsenal win numerous trophies during his time at the club.

By selling Anelka and using the funds to invest in both infrastructure and player recruitment, Wenger demonstrated his ability to make astute decisions that would benefit Arsenal in the long term. The sale of Anelka not only provided financial stability for the club but also paved the way for the arrival of a player who would go on to become an Arsenal legend.

Overall, Wenger’s decision to sell Anelka and use the funds to invest in the training facility and sign Thierry Henry showcased his ability to think ahead and make decisions that would have a lasting impact on the club. It was a genius move that helped shape Arsenal’s success in the years to come.
