Arsenal midfielder Jorginho was today given a chance in the match against Newcastle United and he didn’t disappoint as he had a great performance.
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho put in an incredible performance against Newcastle United on Sunday, earning himself the Player of the Match award. The Gunners won the game 2-0 at St James Park, with Jorginho playing a key role in their victory.
The 31-year-old had 70 touches during the game and completed 44 out of 53 passes. He also won seven out of 12 duels and nine possession winning from opponents. But perhaps most impressively, he created two chances and provided an assist for Martin Odegaard’s goal – the first time he has done so since March 2022, also against Newcastle.
The game got off to a slow start, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. However, Arsenal took the lead in the 14th minute when Odegaard scored a stunning long-range strike. The Norwegian midfielder powered the ball home from distance to give Arsenal the lead.
Newcastle thought they had been awarded a penalty for handball just minutes earlier, but after visiting the Referee Review Area, the decision was overturned and a drop ball was given instead.
The first half ended with Arsenal leading 1-0, but it wasn’t until the 71st minute that they doubled their lead. Fabian Schar turned the ball into his own net after a low cross from Gabriel Martinelli.
The win sees Arsenal remain in second place on the Premier League table with 81 points after 35 games. They are closely following Manchester City who have 82 points plus one game in hand. Meanwhile, Newcastle stay in third place with just 65 points.
Jorginho’s performance was crucial to Arsenal’s victory over Newcastle. His ability to create chances and provide assists shows why he is such an important player for his team. The midfielder joined Arsenal in January transfer window from Chelsea and has quickly become a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side.
With just three games left to play in the Premier League season, Arsenal will be hoping that Jorginho can continue his impressive form and help them secure a top-two finish.
